Can you use Pataday (olopatadine) for red eyes?
Pataday is an antihistamine eye drop that can help when red eyes are caused by allergy (for example, itchy, watery eyes from seasonal allergies). If your main symptom is redness without itching or allergy triggers, Pataday may not address the cause as well.
When Pataday is most likely to help
Pataday is most useful for allergy-related eye symptoms such as:
- Itching
- Watery eyes
- Redness tied to pollen, dust, pet dander, or other allergens
When you should not self-treat with Pataday
Red eyes can come from many causes, and Pataday may not be the right treatment if the redness is from something else, such as:
- Eye infection (often with discharge, crusting, or worsening pain)
- Injury or a foreign body in the eye
- Contact lens–related problems
- Significant pain, light sensitivity, or blurry vision
If you have any of those warning signs, it’s better to get prompt medical advice rather than using allergy drops.
How to use it safely (general guidance)
Follow the specific directions on the Pataday label for dosing and frequency. If you wear contact lenses, check the label for whether you can use the product with lenses in place, and remove lenses if instructed.
What to do if redness doesn’t improve
If your red eyes don’t improve after a short period on the label dosing schedule, or they worsen, get evaluated. The underlying cause may not be allergy.
When to get urgent care
Seek urgent care right away if you have redness plus:
- Moderate to severe eye pain
- Trouble seeing or sudden vision changes
- Severe light sensitivity
- Suspected chemical exposure
- A recent eye injury
