What happens if you use expired saxenda?

Short answer: don’t use expired Saxenda.

What could happen
- Potency may be reduced. Expired liraglutide may not work as well for weight loss, so you might not get the expected effect.
- Safety and efficacy beyond the expiration date aren’t guaranteed. The manufacturer tests potency up to the listed date; after that, the product hasn’t been evaluated for safety.
- For injectable meds, changes in appearance or stability can occur. If the solution looks cloudy, discolored, or has particulates, discard it.

What to do
- Check the expiration date on the box and pen. If it’s expired, discard the pen per local guidelines or return it to your pharmacist.
- If you’re unsure whether a pen is still good, ask your pharmacist or clinician before using it.
- Follow proper storage: Saxenda is refrigerated before first use; after first use, store at room temperature (not above 30°C/86°F) and use within the period specified by the product (usually up to 30 days for a used pen). Do not use beyond the stated storage guidelines.

If you’ve accidentally used a dose from an expired pen
- Talk to your clinician or pharmacist, especially if you notice unusual effects or you’re not seeing the expected results.
- Monitor for injection-site reactions or other symptoms as you normally would, and seek medical advice if you have concerns.
